Course overview

This course aims to promote understanding of the cultural, social and political history of Europe in crisis over the course of the twentieth century, with particular focus on the two world wars, the nature and impact of nationalism, and totalitarian ideologies.

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify the main political, cultural, intellectual and social currents in twentieth century Europe
  • Explain the relationship between the main political, cultural, intellectual and social currents and the nature and impact of war
  • Locate and critically evaluate evidence from a range of primary and secondary sources
  • Organise and synthesise information to formulate arguments about complex historical problems
  • Apply a high level oral and written communication skills to addressing historical problems
