Course overview

This course aims to provide students with the foundation knowledge and skills to investigate and understand design principles and their purpose in achieving effective graphic and communication design results. The course examines theory and practice through design processes and materials to explore creative methods to achieve diverse outcomes. By investigating and applying design principles, students will develop skills essential for creating graphic and visual communication designs with impact for communication purposes. This course aligns with the program's intent to prepare students for designing graphic communication design outcomes of increasing complexity for further study.

Course learning outcomes

  • Recognise and apply the elements and principles applicable to graphic communication design in culture and society to generate effective visual impact for design study and practice
  • Analyse information and apply design foundation knowledge through a broad range of cognitive and technical design skills appropriate for graphic and communication design outcomes through various scenarios
  • Develop analytical skills to explain and record design principles through clear annotation practice for graphic and communication design
  • Exercise self-direction and initiative, informed judgement and responsibility within creative project parameters
