Course overview
This course provides a critical overview of sustainable development and what this requires of government, business and society (including local communities, institutions, and non-governmental organisations), particularly in the context of a changing climate. The interdisciplinary examination aims to highlight the need for a balance between environmental, economic, and social dimensions (the three pillars) of sustainable development.

Course learning outcomes
- Explain the scientific basis of Earth’s climate system and assess the evidence for climate change and its impacts on ecosystems, ecosystem services, and the human systems that support sustainability
- Summarise key sustainability concepts, and critically examine how sustainable development is incorporated and assessed across environmental, social, and economic dimensions
- Evaluate current progress toward sustainability in environmental systems, businesses and industries, and societies, with reference to both Australian and international contexts
- Apply knowledge of key climate change and sustainability concepts to critically assess and clearly explain strategies that advance sustainability, with attention to the environmental, business, and societal pillars.
