Course overview

The aim of this course is to introduce the students to the area of water and wastewater treatment. The course will cover water chemistry; characteristics of water and wastewater; primary, secondary and tertiary treatment processes; sludge disposal; and design of water and wastewater treatment plants.

Students will also gain a working knowledge of the water and wastewater industry and perform a preliminary design of a treatment plant. This course aligns with the program’s intent to demonstrate a chemical engineering body of knowledge and apply this knowledge along with critical thinking, creativity, and innovation for industrial and real-life complex problems.

  • Introduction to water and wastewater treatment
  • Chemical water treatment
  • Physical water treatment
  • Biological treatment and Sludge management

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain the principles of water and wastewater treatment.
  • Explain fundamental water chemistry and chemically driven treatment processes.
  • Identify the parameters that characterise the constituents found in potable water and wastewater;
  • Recognise the common physical, chemical and biological unit operations encountered in treatment processes;
  • Analyse data representative of water or wastewaters and respective treatment processes.
  • Apply fundamental principles to the design of treatment processes, and integrated plant
  • Work collaboratively as part of a small group.
