Course overview

The aim of the course will be to introduce and expand on fundamental process and technological tools for the upstream and bioformulation of biopharmaceutical production processes.

Course learning outcomes

  • State what is upstream processing and its role in development and production
  • Identify and produce different cell expression systems, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses
  • List and identify the main reasons for specific cell media strategies
  • Compare and list different strategies for upstream process optimisation and development
  • Explain, apply, and calculate centrifugation, homogenisation, and filtration steps in process recovery
  • Describe, utilise, and interpret methods of assessing metabolic elemental balance and gas-liquid mass transfer in bioreactors
