Course overview
The objective of the course will be to teach the advantages of continuous manufacturing over batch manufacturing within the pharmaceutical sector and how batch manufacturing unit operations can be transferred into continuous operations. Chromatography as a main unit operation will be covered in detail. Mechanistic modelling as a tool for process modeling will be introduced and students will learn how to use commercial optimization software. By the end of the course, students will be able to plan and optimise continuous processes in biopharma and will be able to use mechanistic modelling software solutions.
Course learning outcomes
- Gain in depth understanding of different approaches of batch and continuous biomanufacturing.
- Understand the principles of in-silico modelling of chromatographic systems and can conduct chromatography modelling based on mechanistic models.
- Can optimise continuous multi column chromatography systems using model commercial mechanistic model software in combination with data anlaysis.
- Understand different mutli-column chromatography set-ups such as simulated moving bed, periodic counter current chromatography and multi-column solvent gradient purification.
- Understand the influence of continuous processing on product quality, plant footprint and utilities consumption.
