Course overview

This course introduces students to apply a systems engineering approach to the elements of an engineering project. The course covers the consideration of the various stages of design, which include problem identification, stakeholder requirements, life cycle management, concept generation, concept selection, design embodiment and design documentation. In addition, the fundamentals of good design practice, including aesthetics, ergonomics safety, and professional engineering practice are covered.

  • Introduction To Systems Engineering
  • The Conceptual Design Of Complex System
  • Beyond Conceptual Design

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain the underpinning principles of systems thinking, the key elements of systems engineering, and the factors driving the development of this technical discipline.
  • Apply a systems engineering approach to the definition and solution of complex engineering problems at a conceptual level.
  • Analyse a given stakeholder need and develop a corresponding set of system requirements.
  • Develop, compare and select conceptual-level solution options appropriate to a set of system requirements.
  • Synthesise and analyse conceptual-level system solutions for a given set of system requirements.
  • Integrate the principles of the Engineers Australia Code of Ethics in the conceptual design of complex systems.
  • Demonstrate professional and effective written, oral, and graphical communication and team-based collaboration.
