Course overview
This two-part course aims to develop the students’ ability to apply chemical engineering principles to a team-based design of a nominated chemical plant. Students analyse and select process technologies using sustainability and decision-making frameworks, perform material and heat balances, and develop process flow diagrams. The course progresses to detailed equipment design and utilities systems, energy balances, safety and process control assessments, plant layout, and piping and instrumentation diagrams. Students also evaluate environmental impacts and conduct process economic analyses. Across both parts, the students complete pre-feasibility and front-end engineering design studies and communicate the outcomes through professional reports and oral presentations.
Course learning outcomes
- Build upon and consolidate the foundational knowledge developed throughout the Chemical Engineering degree
- Develop comprehensive, in-depth knowledge, and a broad understanding that progressively enhance design skills and experience across a range of process, product, and plant design problems
- Apply engineering principles to develop effective solutions to open- ended problems commonly encountered in the process industries
- Use a range of appropriate tools and resources to research, evaluate information, and develop realistic and feasible solutions to the design problem
- Demonstrate creativity, critical thinking, and analytical skills through informed decision- making in situations involving uncertainty
- Demonstrate engineering communication (both verbal and written) for a wide range of stakeholders and purposes
- Work professionally and collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams, demonstrating accountability, respect, and adherence to academic integrity
