Course overview
This two part course involves a small group of students working as a team to design a nominated chemical plant. The tasks in Part A include the study of the available processes, process selection, calculation of material and energy balances, preparation of flow sheets and drawings of the plant layout, and simple economic analysis. The tasks in Part B involve the design of plant equipment, assessments of plant safety, sustainability and environmental impact, and estimation of process economics.
Course learning outcomes
- Explain the fundamentals of process plant design
- Complete conceptual or preliminary process design
- Demonstrate basic engineering plant design
- Construct an assessment of economic performance of the proposed plant
- Complete a HAZOP for a part of the plant to demonstrate safety considerations
- Complete a sustainability and environmental impact assessment of the proposed plant
- Construct a comprehensive basic engineering design report
