Course overview

This course will expand on the basic chemistry covered in Engineering Science to introduce students to structure of unknown molecules through spectroscopic data, quantification of the behaviour of acids, bases and buffers, electronic structure of atoms and the molecular orbital bonding model, and trends in the properties of elements. The critically important topics of chemical thermodynamics and its relationship to equilibrium and reaction kinetics will also be introduced. Extensive laboratory experiments will be undertaken along with the theoretical content.

Course learning outcomes

  • Apply knowledge of basic concepts of chemistry and quantitative skills to solve problems.
  • Interpret, record and present results of laboratory practicals.
  • Interpret safety information to solve problems and prepare for laboratory practicals.
