Course overview
This course aims to provide students with the knowledge of Industry 4.0 methodologies and practices. It will cover principal concepts like digital twins, cyber-physical systems integration, and the industrial internet of things, illustrating their disruptive potential and transformative impact on industries. Students will develop the skills necessary to analyse, evaluate, and implement Industry 4.0 solutions within organisational contexts, fostering innovation and competitiveness. This course aligns with the program goals by fostering engineering knowledge, complex problem-solving abilities, and the capacity for professional communication and teamwork in the context of emergent technological paradigms.

Course learning outcomes
- Describe technology development, manufacturing paradigms, and lean manufacturing for value adding, leading to the development of Industry 4.0
- Apply materials and process selection, design for manufacturing and assembly, and failure modes and effect analysis, the key technical elements in Industry 4.0
- Explain the key concepts and principles of Industry 4.0 technologies, such as digital twins, cyber-physical systems integration, and the Internet of Things, to real-world engineering problems
- Evaluate the impact of Industry 4.0 on manufacturing quality, i.e., Quality 4.0
- Develop strategies for the implementation of Industry 4.0 solutions in diverse organizational contexts and assess the challenges and opportunities in our societies associated with Industry 4.0 adoption, proposing informed recommendations for addressing these issues, i.e., Society 4.0/5.0
