Course overview

This course covers principles of heat transfer, the mechanisms and dimensional analysis of heat transfer modes, heat exchangers, and applications of heat transfer and fluid mechanics in industry applications and in design of thermal systems.

Course learning outcomes

  • Discuss the principles of heat transfer, and the role of conduction, convection and radiation
  • Calculate performance metrics for a range of heat transfer scenarios involving steady state and transient conditions; natural and forced convection; boiling and condensation; and heat and mass transfer and diffusion
  • Understand the role of heat transfer applied to industrial thermal systems
  • Apply the principles of heat transfer to heat exchanger and thermal insulation designs
