Course overview

This course will develop students' knowledge and analytical skills to assess forces and control undesired vibrations of machines/mechanisms as a necessity for Machine Design. Motion analysis in machinery; introduction to kinematics and kinetics of rigid body; kinematic and kinetic analysis of mechanisms; shaking forces and balancing; geared systems; crank effort diagram and flywheels.

Course learning outcomes

  • Determine the position, velocity and acceleration (kinematic parameters) of a machine/mechanism. (PO 1, 2) (EA 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4)
  • Identify the forces and moments present in the machine/mechanism components. (PO4) (EA 2.1, 2.2)
  • Analyse the dynamic behaviour of machines/ mechanisms. (PO 4) (EA 2.1, 2.2)
  • Analyse geared systems. (PO 4) (EA 2.1, 2.2)
  • Determine unbalanced or shaking forces in machinery and control undesired vibrations of machines via balancing the rotary forces. (PO 3, 4) (EA 1.5, 1.6, 2.1, 2.2)
