Course overview
The aims of the soil mechanics course encompass fostering engineering knowledge and research skills while promoting lifelong learning and complex problem-solving abilities. Through effective communication and teamwork, students will gain proficiency in understanding the origin and composition of soil, phase relationship and soil classification, compaction, effective stresses, seepage and liquefaction, consolidation, shear strength, and loading induced stresses and displacements.

Course learning outcomes
- Classify different types of soil and determine their engineering properties
- Analyse soil compaction and other ground improvement techniques
- Explain and calculate the influence of water flow on the engineering behaviour of soils
- Evaluate the compressibility of soils and load-induced stress and displacements
- Examine and calculate the shear strength of soils
- Interpret experimental data and report the results of laboratory experiments to a professional standard
