Course overview
The applications of digital technologies have been escalating in many areas of mining operations. This course covers the fundamental concepts related to these applications, framed in the contexts of operational efficiency, safety, system engineering and mine optimisation. The aim of the course is to provide some basic training to students in the areas of digital evolution in mining, including automated unit operations, data collection and data analytics, sensors and remote control, communications and Internet of Things (IoT), simulation and digital twins, system integration and system engineering.

Course learning outcomes
- Describe the impacts of digital evolution in mining operations
- Demonstrate principles and components of major automated unit operations in mining
- Demonstrate a understand of data collection and data management, principles of big data analytics and prediction modelling, machine learning, artificial intelligence, data visualisation
- Describe the fundamentals of communications in digital mining, Internet of Things (IoT) and basic cyber security
- Explain on-site and off-site digital system integration of mining operations and the concept of digital twins
- Construct digital twin mine models and apply mine simulations to solve practical digital mining problems
