Course overview

This course aims to provide students with advanced knowledge and skills to contribute to engineering activities around complex system of systems, with a focus on conventional submarines for defence.

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify current classes of submarines (Australian, French, German, Spanish, Japanese) and their design philosophies
  • Explain the design to build approach in the context of submarines and their systems
  • Describe the different systems (platform or combat) in a submarine
  • Demonstrate how to build a submarine from a new class or an evolution of an existing one
  • Check the design feasibility of submarines and their seaworthiness
  • Create a submarine concept design from top level requirements
