Course overview

In this course, students will explore cadastral systems and the responsibilities of the cadastral surveyor in land administration. Cadastral and land boundary systems. Real property and interests in land. Australian legal system and legislation related to cadastral surveying and land administration. Historical description of land and accessing of land information details. Introduction to valuation. Statutory framework for regional and local planning. Residential land division design. Social housing. Strata and community titles. Urban and rural land division case studies. Business practice for surveyors. Professionalism, ethics and regulation of cadastral surveying practice.

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain the basis to real property description, land registration and the operation of cadastral systems.
  • Demonstrate comprehension and relevance of laws relating to cadastral surveying and land administration.
  • Apply knowledge of the planning processes and statutory controls to a minor land development problem.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the professional and business management requirements in relation to a practising surveyor.
