Course overview

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the basic concepts of chemistry as they relate to engineering and to provide them with some experience of virtual practical work to the theory in the course. Practical and theoretical studies of properties of matter; physical and chemical changes; atoms, elements and compounds; structure and bonding; acids, bases and salts; redox; precipitation reactions; the mole; heat of reactions; metals, non-metals and their compounds. Periodic Table. Introduction to main engineering aspects of organic chemistry.

Course learning outcomes

  • Interpret relevant basic physical chemistry processes
  • Recall the basics of chemical structure and bonding in ionic and molecular species
  • Identify basic chemistry procedures, including titration, purification, gravimetric and lab safety
