Course overview

This course aims to provide students with an in-depth view of the modern fibre communications technology and the photonic principles that underpin it.

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain engineering fundamentals of photogeneration, photodetection, lightwave propagation, for optical communications
  • Be able to design an analog optical communications system and perform link budget analysis
  • Be able to design a digital optical communications system and perform a link budget analysis
