Course overview
This course provides a general introduction to the topic of electrical machines. It covers the principles, construction, modelling and analysis of transformers, and DC and AC electrical machines. It begins with the principles of power engineering circuit analysis including phasors, complex power and 3ph concepts. The key focus of the course is equivalent circuits for transformers and electric machines. It discusses the derivation and physical significance of these equivalent circuits, how their parameters can be found, and their use in analysis of machine operation. This course provides a foundation for later courses in advanced electrical machines, power electronics and motor drives, and power systems.
- Power Circuit Analysis
- Electromagnetics And Transformers
- DC and AC Machines
Course learning outcomes
- Analyse single and three-phase AC power circuits using phasors, determine the real and reactive power flow, and demonstrate power-factor correction to a simple circuit.
- Apply electromagnetic theory to analyse the performance of transformers using magnetic and electric equivalent circuits, and explain concepts of the back-EMF equation, saturation and iron losses.
- Analyse the performance of DC and AC machines using the appropriate equivalent circuit. Explain their construction, operating principles and the physical significance of each equivalent circuit parameter. Find the equivalent circuit parameters from appropriate tests.
- Describe the major components of an electric drive system and an electric power system.
- Demonstrate practical skills through performing experiments in small groups in the laboratory on electric machines to determine their parameters and performance. Analyse the results and produce a written report.
