Course overview

This course provides an introduction to telecommunications technologies in common use, with an emphasis on mobile systems. Topics include: Plain old telephone system; Common channel signalling; PDH, SDH, ATM and IP, QoS on packet networks and principles of error correction coding; Second and third generation cellular systems (GSM to UMTS)

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate a broad understanding of fixed line telephony and related networking and multiplexing technologies
  • Demonstrate a broad understanding of 2G and 3G Mobile telephony systems, including mobility management and network dimensioning
  • Demonstrate a broad understanding of Wide area packet data networks, including Internet Protocol and ATM
