Course overview

This course provides students with approaches to the design of timber elements, connections and frames as well as the design of load bearing masonry and masonry veneers.

Course learning outcomes

  • Understand and apply the principles of timber design including the impact of using engineered and mass timbers, and the time-dependent properties that are influenced by environmental conditions
  • Understand and apply the principles of reinforced and unreinforced masonry design for both load bearing masonry and masonry veneers
  • Analyse and design members subjected to the single and combined actions of axial loading, bending and shear
  • Demonstrate application of AS1720 and AS3700 to the design of timber and masonry elements
  • Understand the environmental impact of timber and masonry construction and apply this knowledge to the design of timber and masonry structures
