Course overview

The reuse of structures is central to achieving environmental sustainability, this course introduces students to the concept of adaptive reuse including an introduction to the assessment of existing structures and the design of retrofits to strengthen steel, concrete and masonry elements.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe the mechanisms via which the performance of structures change over time and with exposure to the environment in terms of both material and structural behaviour and using this information quantify the change in performance
  • Describe and quantify the underlying mechanisms that control retrofit behaviour including the degree of connection and interaction between the existing structure and the retrofit
  • Analyse and design retrofits that can be applied to concrete, masonry and steel structures
  • Understand the environmental impact of retrofitting and apply this knowledge to the design of structural retrofits
