Course overview
This course delves into advanced topics of hydraulic systems for civil engineers. Students will explore both the fundamental theories and the practical skills necessary for designing and managing pipeline and open channel systems. The curriculum includes in-depth modules on pipeline systems, covering minor loss elements, pumps, pipe networks, and extended period simulations. For open channel systems, the course will cover flow profile plotting and computation, 1D flow profile simulation, and hydraulics structures such as weirs, spillways, sluice gates, and channel networks. Additionally, students will engage in laboratory practicals and undertake a comprehensive design project to apply their theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios.
Course learning outcomes
- Identify the relevant theoretical frameworks for problems relating to pipeline and open channel systems
- Develop and execute solution strategies for problems relating to pipeline and open channel systems
- Develop and apply computer modelling techniques to pipeline and open channel systems
- Critically evaluate and effectively synthesise simulation results for pipeline and open channel systems models
- Undertake laboratory experiments on a range of hydraulic systems, and employ appropriate hydraulics theory to analyse measured data
- Apply pipeline and open channel system design principles to a semi-structured design problem and write a comprehensive technical design report
