Course overview

This course equips students with the fundamentals of sustainable reinforced concrete design including the design of beams and slabs for bending and shear, the design of columns under combined axial bending and shear loads and the basics of detailing of reinforcement.

  • An Introduction To Reinforced Concrete
  • The Behaviour Of Beams In Bending
  • Analysis And Design For Servicability
  • Analysis And Design Of Flexural Members For Bending Strength
  • Analysis And Design Of Flexural Members For Shear Strength
  • Analysis And Design Of Axially Loaded Members

Course learning outcomes

  • Understand and apply the principles of reinforced concrete design including the impacts of time effects and member cross section on strength, stiffness and ductility
  • Analyse and design members subjected to the single and combined actions of axial loading, bending and shear
  • Demonstrate application of AS3600 to the design of reinforced concrete elements
  • Understand the environmental impact of reinforced concrete construction and apply this knowledge to the design of concrete structures
