Course overview

The course aims to introduce students to the practical aspects of the construction industry. The content of the course includes engineering construction terminology; common construction methods and processes; project organisation and management; contracts and specifications; scheduling and cost estimation; elementary surveying principles; and familiarisation with selected surveying equipment. Students will develop a strong foundation in construction management with professional practice in construction surveying.

Course learning outcomes

  • Articulate key concepts in construction methods and processes, project management, contracts and specifications
  • Estimate construction timelines and costs for a civil engineering project
  • Articulate and develop the awareness of workplace health, safety, welfare, ethics and environmental issues are relevant to the construction industry
  • Recognise applicable techniques and limitations for steel and concrete structures, construction of roads, bridges and tunnels
  • Operate basic surveying equipment and complete a levelling traverse
  • Summarise the results of a practical experiment to a professional standard
