Course overview
This course provides essential knowledge to support student success as a pre-service teacher conducting outdoor learning experiences in the primary and middle years.
The purpose of the course is to provide core knowledge to support high quality teaching and learning in the primary and middle years of schooling through effective evaluation of student needs, inclusive practices, design of curriculum to teach other learning areas in an outdoor learning and outdoor environmental education context. This will include development of explicit learning intentions, planning and logistics, selection of appropriate pedagogies, development of effective teacher-student relationships, assessment design that is appropriate to the school context and community.
Course learning outcomes
- Describe primary and middle years learner needs that considers their developmental level and locale relevant to Outdoor Environmental Education in the primary and middle years.
- Describe curriculum relevant to Outdoor Environmental Education in the primary and middle years.
- Plan and prepare a unit of work, lesson plans and assessment tools to support effective teaching of Outdoor Environmental Education in the primary and/or middle years.
- Describe and apply a selection of pedagogical practices to support student learning in Outdoor Environmental Education in the primary and/or middle years.
- Describe approaches to development of safe and effective student-teacher relationships.
- Teach, reflect upon and evaluate effectiveness of planning and teaching outdoor environmental education learning episodes in the primary and/or middle years.
