Course overview

The use of sophisticated technologies for spoken and written communication and associated multimedia resources have become increasingly accessible and widespread in the workforce and in society in general. Students in the course will explore and critique the application of a range of contemporary technologies relevant to the learning of language(s) in a school context and critically evaluate their potential use against the needs, purposes and goals for specific cohorts of language learners, including EALD learners. Students will reflect on their own decision-making processes for selecting technologies and associated applications and resources for planning, teaching and assessing in the language(s) classroom.

Course learning outcomes

  • Understand the principles and challenges of language translation
  • Critically analyse output from machine translation tools for possible revision for specific contexts and purposes
  • Critically analyse the use of a range of contemporary technologies to inform practices in the language classroom
  • Critically reflect on the responsible use of GenAI for teaching, planning and assessment purposes
  • Critically consider the use of mixed reality experiences in the classroom setting for situated and contextualised communicative experiences
