Course overview
This course will develop critical understanding of the content, practices and theories of teaching English at secondary level, with a focus on the middle years. Pre-service teachers will learn about the content and requirements of secondary English Curricula and the theories and pedagogical approaches for integrating reading, writing, speaking and listening. They will explore a range of text types, genres and literature appropriate for the study of English at secondary level, bringing together theory and practice to design teaching, learning and assessment sequences. They will consider the role of evaluation and reflection to improve key aspects of their professional practice.

- Select and appraise a range of literary texts relevant for study in English at secondary level
- Identify the challenges and opportunities for the inclusive teaching of writing and text production for diverse learners in secondary English
- Plan, develop, justify and reflect on teaching and learning experiences
- Explain and discuss the scope of secondary English curricula
- Critically evaluate concepts and theories of teaching, learning and assessment, and apply them to the development of a teaching and learning sequence
