Course overview

This course aims to equip TESOL/EALD educators with critical insight into contemporary issues shaping English language education in diverse contexts. Through the exploration of equity, inclusion, and social justice; Global and World Englishes; and the policy and political forces influencing TESOL, students will develop the analytical, reflective, and practical skills needed to navigate complex classroom realities, advocate for equitable practices, and respond to global linguistic diversity with informed pedagogical approaches.

Course learning outcomes

  • Critically analyse issues of equity, inclusion, and social justice within TESOL contexts, and evaluate their implications for learners, teachers, and communities both locally and globally
  • Examine the evolving identity of TESOL/EALD educators and explore the role of professional development in shaping teacher agency, reflective practice, and ethical decision-making in diverse educational settings
  • Understand and critique the concepts of Global Englishes and World Englishes, assessing their impact on language teaching methodologies, curriculum design, assessment, and learner identity
  • Evaluate educational policies and political pressures that influence TESOL at institutional, national, and international levels, with an emphasis on how such forces shape classroom practice and access to language education
  • Engage with current research and theoretical frameworks relevant to contemporary debates in TESOL, applying them to real-world challenges and proposing informed, context-sensitive solutions
