Course overview

To explore why Catholic Schools exist today, key research and beliefs about learners and teachers in Catholic Schools as well as pedagogies and professional practices that enhance the aims of Catholic Education. Participants will reflect on how Catholic theology contributes to the educator’s beliefs about children, childhood and adolescence, to their personal and professional identity and to choices about educational principles, methods and approaches best aligned to enhancing the mission of contemporary Catholic Schools.

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain the importance of context for the design of contemporary Religious Education curricula in Catholic Schools
  • Articulate a philosophy for teaching and learning in the Religious Education learning area relevant to the contemporary Catholic School classroom
  • Analyse and critique key elements in designing Religious Education curriculum
  • Design and implement effective curricula in Religious Education (or in an integrated curriculum) consistent with an articulated philosophy of Religious Education, drawing on the Crossways Religious Education Curriculum and course perspectives
