Course overview

The aim of the course is to develop the mathematical skills and knowledge for teaching mathematics in the primary years of schooling, with a focus on developing spatial reasoning through deep conceptual understanding of the curriculum content of measurement and geometry. This course will focus on developing subject-matter knowledge relevant for Primary mathematics, focusing on mathematical concepts, identifying relationships in and between these concepts and how these concepts progress and develop in the primary years. The course has a strong focus on using digital technologies effectively for teaching mathematics and draws on content from the Measurement and Space content strands of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics.

Course learning outcomes

  • Design and present a mathematical problem with a focus on measurement and geometry
  • Critique the role of digital technologies in measurement and geometry with a focus on conceptual and spatial reasoning, perspective, and visualisation
  • Demonstrate their capacity to communicate mathematically through the processes of problem solving, reasoning, verifying, reflecting and applying
