Course overview

This aim of this course is to build preservice teachers’ self-reflection to support their personal growth and development as a teacher of mathematics. It unpacks the domains of mathematical knowledge for teaching and the strategies that emphasise teaching for understanding. Working with the mathematics curriculum documents, pre-service teachers will plan learning experiences (including selecting and using resources).

Course learning outcomes

  • Select, critique and apply strategies for teaching mathematics in the middle years
  • Critically reflect on personal and professional perspectives of the nature of mathematics taught in school, including in relation to their development as a teacher of mathematics
  • Select, evaluate, and use a range of resources to engage students in learning mathematics
  • Plan and implement learning experiences and sequences for particular contexts and purposes, and that align with relevant curriculum frameworks
  • Observe and analyse teacher practice
