Course overview

This course aims to introduce and examine early literacy theories, practices and multimodal literature for children of diverse backgrounds and experiences, including in English, multicultural and multilingual contexts.

Course learning outcomes

  • Understand and critically appraise different theories, models, and practices for literacy learning
  • Apply understandings of multimodality and plurilingualism to the models and practices for literacy learning
  • Explain the role of imagination and literary texts in children’s development and learning
  • Identify and critically analyse quality literature and authentic texts from a range of historical, social, and cultural contexts
  • Apply detailed knowledge of a range of literary theories and the language and literary features and patterns to the analysis of literary, non-fiction and multimodal texts
  • Apply strategies for responding to literary texts to planning for teaching and learning
