Course overview
This course investigates the importance of play in early childhood through content that focuses on theoretical perspectives and the co-construction of learning through constructivist pedagogies. Students will engage in critical reflection on their own beliefs, values and experiences of play, as they consider the pedagogy of play and investigate the relationship between play, learning and development.

Course learning outcomes
- Critically examine multiple perspectives of play and its value and benefits
- Critically analyse adults’ roles in children’s play, considering Australian and international perspectives about play in the curriculum and the relationship between play, development, learning and wellbeing
- Apply practical knowledge and theoretical understanding of play-based pedagogy to plan diverse and balanced programs for children birth – 5 years
- Use observation, listening and documentation pedagogies in planning and assessing play-based pedagogy that acknowledges children’s competence and voice in co-constructed meaning in play.
