Course overview

This course will provide preservice teachers with knowledge and experience of pedagogical approaches, curriculum content and practices in the areas of Health, Physical Education and the Arts (Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music, Visual Arts) relevant for young learners and to actively and critically study the Arts and HPE and their application as curriculum content within educational environments. Preservice teachers will engage with a cross-disciplinary approach to learning through Health, Physical Education and the Arts (Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music and Visual Arts). Preservice teachers will audit their existing knowledge, skills, and understanding in Health, Physical Education and the Arts in relation to curriculum frameworks and professional standards (e.g. ACECQA and AITSL). Through creative, active and play-based pedagogies preservice teachers will learn about a range of subject specific pedagogies in order to plan for progression and assessment

  • Engage with research that identifies the benefits of creative, play-based physical activity for teaching and learning
  • Critically analyse current national and international Health and Physical Education and Arts curriculum content and material
  • Plan, implement and document authentic HPE and Arts learning experiences
  • Apply a critical understanding of HPE and arts-related inclusive pedagogical practices
  • Refer to literacy and numeracy concepts that are embedded in the Arts and HPE
  • Reflect and apply Aboriginal perspectives in the Arts and HPE
