Course overview

To develop informed and critical understandings of the curriculum, policies, theories and practices of ‘First Nations education’ with a focus on Culturally Responsive Pedagogies for teachers and leaders of learning. Curriculum construction is not neutral and is power laden. In this course we critically consider how curriculum and policy in Australia is entangled with ongoing coloniality. To develop critical understanding and appropriate policy and curriculum content knowledge required by leaders and teachers to engage Aboriginal students, and to teach all students about Aboriginal histories, cultures, and languages as required by the Australian Curriculum, Early Years Learning Framework and AITSL’s Professional Standards for Teachers 1.4 and 2.4.

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain the knowledge and skills required to work effectively with diverse Aboriginal learners, families, peoples, perspectives, and histories
  • Explain and justify assessment, curriculum and evidence-based pedagogical practices relevant to Aboriginal education
  • Interpret knowledge of culturally responsive teaching that respects and values the democratic rights of Aboriginal children and the sovereignties of Aboriginal First Nations through education
  • Critically analyse the contested nature of curriculum and policy in critical curriculum studies and education literature
