Course overview

This course aims to develop professional educators' global perspectives to help better understand the fluid environment in which they operate. Students will gain new and valuable understandings into their own contexts and professional practices by analysing the ways in which others establish, operate and maintain their educational systems. This course has been designed to generate insights into the similarities and differences embedded in education systems from a range of sectors including schooling, tertiary learning, further education, vocational education and training and alternative learning programs, enabling students to reflect on the future of the field from an international perspective.

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify and explain how factors including linguistic, cultural, historical, social, environmental, economic, and political contexts influence education policy development in multicultural societies.
  • Compare and critically analyse the education policies of different countries, states, regions in terms of how they meet the educational and learning needs of multicultural societies.
  • Critically analyse multicultural education policy development through participation in and contribution to whole class and group discussions.
  • In groups, develop an educational policy for a multicultural society.
  • Critically evaluate and communicate research findings on multicultural educational policy issues through academic presentation.
  • Critically analyse and synthesise multicultural education policy issues through well-researched written academic argument.
