Course overview

To examine contemporary issues related to the intersection between religious perspectives within Islam, diverse perspectives held by Muslim peoples, and secular schooling environments, including the impact this may have on classrooms and school communities. To develop cultural and religious capabilities for working effectively within Islamic school communities and responsive pedagogy for the strengths and needs of Muslim students.

Course learning outcomes

  • Critically examine epistemological diversity in Australian schooling and the place and relevance for Islamic thought including consideration of Islamic Research Methodology, Islamic worldview and terms of reference for Muslim education
  • Critically analyse diversity within Muslim communities, perspectives, and divergences and differences in opinion, beliefs and practices.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of teaching strategies responsive to the needs and strengths of Muslim students.
  • Demonstrate cultural and religious capabilities for working effectively within Islamic school communities and/or classrooms with Muslim students.
