Course overview

To critically examine Islam and Muslim societies in the contemporary world through an investigation of Muslims' beliefs, rituals, customs and practices; the connections between traditional Islam and the contemporary world, and trends that are affecting the interpretations and practice of Islam today.

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify, explain and contrast the essential beliefs and practices of Muslims
  • Examine the importance of Islam in the lives of contemporary Muslims
  • Analyse and compare the differences among Muslims concerning social, economic, and political issues
  • Analyse and discuss the views of present-day Islamic scholars on issues that affect the lives of Muslims
