Course overview

To provide students with an advanced knowledge of the history of the Islamic civilisation from the time of prophet Muhammad to the fall of the Ottoman Empire. In doing so the course will examine the social, political and religious factors that led to the formation of a formidable Islamic civilisation that continues to influence the modern world.

Course learning outcomes

  • Analyse the evolving nature of the Islamic civilisation and its impact on contemporary Muslim societies
  • Evaluate the causes that led to the rise and fall of various Islamic empires
  • Examine the social, political and religious contexts of various Islamic empires in different geographical regions
  • Present a case that highlights the relations, commonalities and differences between the Islamic and Western Civilisations
