Course overview
To provide students with an advanced knowledge of the history of the Islamic civilisation from the time of prophet Muhammad to the fall of the Ottoman Empire. In doing so the course will examine the social, political and religious factors that led to the formation of a formidable Islamic civilisation that continues to influence the modern world.
Course learning outcomes
- Analyse the evolving nature of the Islamic civilisation and its impact on contemporary Muslim societies
- Evaluate the causes that led to the rise and fall of various Islamic empires
- Examine the social, political and religious contexts of various Islamic empires in different geographical regions
- Present a case that highlights the relations, commonalities and differences between the Islamic and Western Civilisations

If you are continuing in a program you commenced prior to 1 January 2021, or are commencing an Honours degree relating to an undergraduate degree you commenced prior to 1 January 2021, you may be charged a different Student Contribution amount from the amount displayed below. Please check the Student Contribution bands for continuing students here. If you are an international student, or a domestic student studying in a full fee paying place, and are continuing study that you commenced in 2025 or earlier, your fees will be available here before enrolments open for 2026.
