Course overview

This course will provide students with an opportunity to undertake a community service project in order to develop an appreciation for how their discipline knowledge intersects with community (as distinct from corporate) need. Students will work in multi-disciplinary teams to manage real projects and solve real problems experienced by community organisations. They will work with the community partner to understand their needs, scope the project and develop viable and sustainable solutions.

Students will complete a learning journal throughout the course which reflects on the progress of the project, their use of the knowledge and skills taught throughout their degree, and the relevance of the service-learning project experience to their future careers.

Course learning outcomes

  • Apply technical material from their discipline to the resolution of community problems
  • Develop and implement an appropriate project plan
  • Identify and acquire new knowledge as a part of the problem solving process
  • Function on multidisciplinary teams and appreciate the contribution of individuals from other disciplines
  • Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Demonstrate the ability to reflect on their experiences and identify learning that has taken place
