Course overview

To introduce students to the areas of student diversity and special education with a focus on student development.

Course learning outcomes

  • understand the theory, research and issues related to the special needs, diversity, inclusion and wellbeing areas
  • be familiar with particular types of special needs/student diversity and describe typical characteristics and needs of such students
  • identify and assess the needs of special education/diverse students and apply inclusive programming and teaching practices
  • analyse current inclusion strategies in practice based and service learning experiences and apply knowledge of special needs and inclusion theories and research
  • identify the relationship and implications of classroom practice, working with families, support services and community groups
  • develop an inquiry question to research and analyse in an area of special needs/student diversity contributing to the teacher-research nexus
  • demonstrate awareness of relevant legislative, ethical and policy requirements regarding inclusive education and teaching children with special needs
