Course overview

The aim of this course is to enable students to experience dance as an educative and recreation form and come to appreciate its physical, social and emotional potential. Students will build theoretical understandings around forms of dance, energy systems, biomechanical principles, skill acquisition and dance methodology. Students will develop skills in planning and executing dance experiences appropriate for education and recreation.

Course learning outcomes

  • Present meaningful dance experiences, both practical and theoretical, to a range of populations
  • Identify developmentally appropriate dance experiences for a range of populations
  • Identify the physical, social, creative and recreational purposes of a dance form
  • Evaluate the various educative and recreational purposes of dance in global society
  • Extend personal skills and range of movement including physical, memory, sequencing and coordination
  • Apply various methodological approaches to the teaching of dance
