Course overview
This course aims to consolidate and extend preservice teachers' knowledge, skills and professional expertise associated with teaching and learning in the area of child studies in a secondary school setting. A focus on issues related to the diverse range of values and beliefs about childhood and the care of children, the nature of contemporary families and the changing roles of children in a contemporary consumer society will be addressed. There is a strong focus on integrating both the theoretical and practical aspects of child studies in a senior school classroom.
Course learning outcomes
- Critically analyse and integrate comprehensive knowledge of child development from conception to eight years within the context of a senior school classroom
- Plan, enact and critique learning sequences, drawing on contemporary concepts and community connections
- Employ a high level of practical skill in the production of child studies projects suitable for the senior school classroom
- Identify issues related to the growth, health, and well-being of children, with a focus on the implications for teaching
- Apply WHS knowledge in identifying, applying, and using tools and equipment in the child studies context
