Course overview

This course aims to support students towards their future role as an arts educator by deepening and extending subject knowledge of traditional and contemporary dance and music education. Working with dance and music pedagogies students will gain mastery of these subjects for the primary school learning environment with a focus on the changing nature of dance and music education and its impact on diverse young people in the community.

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the role and function of Dance and Music in diverse contemporary communities and their impact on young people
  • Identify traditional and contemporary approaches to Dance and Music in curriculum decision making and research
  • Experience and critically reflect on the intrinsic and instrumental value of dance and music in the curriculum
  • Apply current and appropriate pedagogies for Dance and Music
  • Identify Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Dance and Music as intrinsic to Australian cultural knowledge, understanding and communication
  • Demonstrate reflective practice in working as an active teacher/artist educator
