Course overview

This course aims to develop students' competence in understanding and using grammar to teach different texts across the curriculum. Students will develop an in-depth knowledge of grammar from both the traditional and systemic functional views. Students will critically analyse texts suited to their learning areas and examine patterns of language and word choices so they can understand how grammar has been used to achieve different purposes. They will transfer their knowledge of grammar and TESOL strategies to assist in teaching texts appropriate to their subject specialisations eg a Maths investigation report, a Science practical report, a historical recount in HASS or a product evaluation in Technology Studies.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe how context and purpose influence language choices in different genres (text types)
  • Explain grammatical features and the importance of teaching grammar explicitly across the curriculum
  • Apply a range of techniques for gathering and reflecting on evidence of student learning
