Course overview

This course will introduce preservice teachers to the theory and practice of curriculum, pedagogy and assessment across diverse learning settings. Preservice teachers will be introduced to the perspectives and underpinning principles of curriculum, assessment, and pedagogy in contemporary education settings. They will use these perspectives to describe curriculum, pedagogy and assessment practices relevant to their role as a teacher. Preservice teachers will develop an understanding of the relationship between pedagogy and social justice and the implications this has for curriculum and assessment practices.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe the contested nature of the curriculum and assessment
  • Define the factors that shape curriculum development, and the role stakeholders play in these processes
  • Explain the principles and practices associated with quality pedagogy and assessment
  • Discuss the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of contemporary Australian primary education, including curriculum, policy and pedagogy
  • Explain the relationship between pedagogy and social justice and the implications this relationship has for curriculum and assessment practices
