Course overview
This course will develop students' understandings of the concepts of Asia Literacy and Asia Capability and their capacity to critically analyse Australia's historical and contemporary relationship with Asia. Students will develop a critical understanding of Australia's relationship with Asia since 1800, investigate the contemporary social and economic profiles of countries across the Asia region, evaluate the narrative in Australia around the Asian Century, and Asia Literacy in education in particular, reflect on the implications of Australia's engagement in the Asian Century for their own professional futures, and investigate the current dynamics of Australia's relationship with four key nations in Asia.

- Explain key events in Australia's relationship with Asia since 1800
- Analyse the concept of Asia Literacy and how it plays out in education or the workplace
- Undertake an analysis of Australia's contemporary relationship with four key nations (China, Japan, India and Indonesia)
- Investigate the dynamics in the movements of people between Asia and Australia with a focus on migration, employment, education and tourism
- Consider future directions in the Australia/Asia relationship
