Course overview

This course aims to introduce students to the foundational concepts of behavioural economics, a field that blends insights from psychology and economics to better understand how individuals make decisions. It challenges the traditional notion of fully rational behaviour by examining how cognitive biases, emotions, and social influences shape economic choices. Through the study of key principles such as loss aversion, confirmation bias, and heuristics, students will gain a deeper understanding of why real-world decisions often deviate from classical economic predictions. The course equips learners with tools to critically analyse behaviour and apply these insights in policy-making, business, and everyday contexts.

Course learning outcomes

  • Critically analyse complex economic and managerial problems using foundational behavioural economics theories and concepts.
  • Apply behavioural insights and psychological drivers to evaluate and influence decision-making in business and policy settings.
  • Design and communicate behaviourally informed interventions that address business or policy challenges, with consideration for ethical, cultural, and organisational diversity.
  • Demonstrate advanced communication and reflective skills to engage stakeholders and evaluate the impact of behavioural interventions.
